Thin-Set vs Mortar For Your Tile Backsplashes

Before you head out to start your new tile backsplash project, you are going to want to educate yourself on the different styles of mortar that you can use. A lot of homeowners get confused about which type to use under different circumstances, but hopefully this article will help you make your way through the various types, and names that you will encounter while you’re preparing for the project.

Thin-Set Mortar – Thin-Set mortar is the most common type of adhesive that you are going to find when you’re doing tile projects in your home. It provides a superior bond, and is incredibly easy to use, making it perfect for beginners. One thing that you’ll want to make sure, when using thin-set, is that you do not use it on floors that will flex under your weight, because it will run the risk of cracking. Thin-Set is cheap to use, and makes it easy to set tiles on without having the material dry on you too quickly.

Organic Mastic – Organic mastic is a petroleum or latex based product that is most commonly used for wall tiles. The makeup of the product makes it so that tiles will stick to the adhesive fairly easily, which makes it perfect for hanging tiles on vertical structure. One downfall of organic mastic is that you are unable to level the underlying material, which can cause an uneven finish on the tiles unless you take the proper steps to level the surface before applying the adhesive.

Brick Mortar – Brick mortar is, most commonly, used for setting brick on brick applications. The thicker sand and small pebbles make it ideal for putting together brick walls and walkways, but make it a poor adhesive for indoor wall tiling projects. You should avoid this at all costs for your tile backsplash.

Epoxy Thin-Set Mortar – Epoxy thin-set mortar is a resin-based product that comes in three different components: resin, hardener and powder. When you are working with epoxy you are going to have to make sure everything is laid out in advance, and that you are ready to set the marble tileswhen you begin mixing the materials. Epoxy mortar sets incredibly fast, which means that you are going to encounter problems if you are not completely ready. However, because it sets quickly you are able to start grouting much sooner than other types of adhesive.
